I attended the Outdoor Retailer Show recently, a week of gear envy, parties, and reunions with industry buddies.
This tradeshow takes place every summer in Salt Lake City, gelling together a motley crew of business people, adventure addicts, athletes and vagabonds. The convention centre is a sea of people, shiny new toys and action.
The show goes beyond the air-conditioned walls of the convention centre though. No outdoorsy person can go more than a day or so with out getting out and doing something, and luckily Salt Lake City is situated perfectly for those daily escapes. The first day I flew in I bolted for Big Cottonwood Canyon, where we spent the afternoon climbing on some beautiful rock. Mid show there was a 5km early-morning trail run attended by over 200 tradeshow participants, while everybody else slept off hangovers. Sleep was a scarce commodity at this show, with all the action during the day, and then big industry parties every night. RYDERS hosted a party at the show one evening, in commemoration of our 25th Anniversary. The get-together was highlighted by cold beer, a three-layer cake, and 80’s tunes. To top it off, all the RYDERS staff rocked some amazing 80’s outfits. The party continued with a very coincidental 80’s party at a night club, hosted by Teva.
I had a great OR show, meeting retailers and reps, and talking to new customers about the RYDERS product line. It was a lot of fun to meet people from other corners of the outdoor industry too. Although it took another full week to catch up on lost sleep, I am already looking forward to next year!
